Whitman's Candies started in 1842 when Stephen F. Whitman set up a small confectionery and fruiterer shoppe near the Philadelphia waterfront. It was not until 1912, however, that the company introduced the Whitman's Sampler. The brainchild of the company's then president, the inspiration came from a cross-stitched sampler handmade by his grandmother. The name, Whitman's Sampler, determined its contents as well--a custom assortment of pieces from 10 of its best-selling packages. To help people with the selection, he added an index (a diagram in the box lid identifying each chocolate), an industry first. By 1915, the Whitman's Sampler had become the company's and the country's best-selling boxed chocolate package. At 100 years, the Whitman's Sampler is an American tradition whose packages adorn collections from the individual enthusiast to the Smithsonian Institution.
