The Human Story: New Scientist: The Collection

We are a truly remarkable species. In the space of a few thousand years we have transformed the planet, created a technological civilisation the likes of which have never been seen, an even begun to explore space. If intelligent aliens visited Earth today, it would not take them long to figure out who was in charge. <br /> <br />Had they visited 4 million years ago, however, they would have encountered a very different planet. At that time our ancestors were fairly unremarkable apes, confined (we think) to Africa and with little to suggest that they were about to take over. <br /> <br />The Human Story is dedicated to our remarkable evolutionary journey from ordinary ape to superhuman: the identity of our distant ancestors, the evolution of our brains, genomes and languages, how wanderlust led us to colonise every continent on earth, the invention of culture and civilisation and new insights into the other humans we once shared the planet with. <br />
