Originally, the Mustang was used by the Royal Air Force for reconnaissance and bombing raids. It was later updated, however, with the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin supercharged engine, widely considered one of the finest piston engines ever made. This upgrade, along with its six M2 Browning machine guns, made it one of the most efficient fighters used during World War II.</p> <p>The P-51 continued to serve during the Korean War, but was slowly replaced as newer fighter-bombers were manufactured. By the mid-1950s, the Mustang was finally phased out of the U.S. Air Force.
