Young women in colorful kimonos enjoy springtime blossoms on four views of spring gardens by 19th century Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige II. Galison's Japanese Gardens keepsake box holds 4 note cards each of four reproductions of colored woodcuts: Tree Paeonia Viewing, Camellia Viewing, Ipomea Viewing, and Wisteria Bridge. All are from the LuEsther T. Mertz Library at the New York Botanical Garden. The artist, Hiroshige II (1826-1869) was originally named Suzuki Chimpei, but took the name of his teacher, Ando Hiroshge, the undisputed master of the woodblock print. The sturdy decorative box holds cards and envelopes neatly, and when the cards have been sent, it's great for storing all sorts of little things—from extra buttons to pearls.
