Georgia O Keeffe created images of powerful simplicity. She invited viewers to see the familiar in a new way, often enlarging the delicate structure of a flower to fill an entire canvas or distilling a vast desert landscape into a few details. Her desire to create an equivalent for what I felt about what I was looking at fueled her abundant creativity and distinct mode of expression. <br> Born in Wisconsin in 1887, O Keeffe spent years in New York with her mentor and husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz. When Stieglitz died, she moved permanently to New Mexico, where the high desert s rich palette and undulating topography proved constantly inspiring; she continued painting until a few weeks before her death, in 1986.
