El Alcalde del Barrio
The late Joe Cuba was a master of fusing hybrid sounds, both<br>Latin and Soul, and had the vision to architect a new one called<br>Boogaloo. He headed the Latin soul movement and was lyrically<br>fluent with Spanish and English always sporting an urban attitude.<br>He sang, played congas and earned a reputation putting on swinging,<br>dynamic shows with a unique vibraphone-fronted six member<br>band. He delighted New Yorkers and soon the fever spread across<br>the country. Joe Cuba scored big with the #1 hit song Bang Bang<br>Push Push and ushered in the Latin Soul movement with El Pito<br>(Never Going Back To Georgia). His music was the catalyst of the<br>'Nuyorican' movement and he will be forever known as El Alcalde<br>Del Barrio , the honorary mayor of Spanish Harlem.
