Product Description

COUNCIL TOOL Double Bit Axe - 3.5 lb. Michigan Pattern Axe with 36" Straight Wooden Handle & Forged Steel Head - 35-2MR

 • TRADITIONAL MICHIGAN PATTERN – Originating in Michigan, this classic double bit shape offers proven performance for general utility and woodcutting.
 • HIGH CARBON STEEL HEAD - Crafted from durable high carbon steel and hand-sharpened for a tapered bit, this axe is made in the USA for reliable cutting and splitting in tough conditions, ensuring long-lasting performance and precision.
 • VERSATILE EDGE GEOMETRY – Historically sharpened with one fine edge for clean cuts and one blunt edge for rougher work near knots or dirt—this model features uniform sharpening for balanced use.
 • AMERICAN HICKORY HANDLE - Made from tough, straight-grain American hickory, the handle offers excellent balance and control for close-quarters use, with a low moisture content to reduce shrinkage and ensure a secure fit.
 • RUST-RESISTANT HEAD - The axe head is heat-treated for durability, then coated with red enamel and clear lacquer on the cutting edges to prevent rust, ensuring long-lasting protection and optimal performance.

Council has been making hand tools since 1886, and they set the standard for quality and design. All Council axe heads are drop forged from high quality tool steel.

3.5 LB MICHIGAN PATTERN DOUBLE BIT AXE WITH 36 INCH STRAIGHT WOODEN HANDLE

NOTE:

Michigan pattern originated from the state of the same name. One end is thinner and sharper and used for knot-free cutting; the other end is thicker and blunter and is used when knots were present or to cut near the ground where contact with dirt is likely.

PRODUCT DETAILS AT GLANCE:

Forged tool steel head

Hand sharpened double bits for cutting and splitting, sharpened in the same manner

ANSI Standards call for bit hardness of Rc 45-60, at least ? inch back from the cutting edge. Council Tool internal standards call for tempered bit hardness of Rc 48-55 and we target 1-1/4 inches from the cutting edge.

Head coated with red enamel and cutting edges in clear lacquer to deter rust

36 inch double-bit American hickory handle. Eye section is dried to below 10% moisture content to minimize shrinkage and help prevent loosening

Axe head is hydraulically seated onto handle and secured with a serrated aluminum wedge. The serrated shape improves bite and the aluminum choice of material is strong, lightweight and does not change size with moisture content.

The interior detail of the eye is tapered and allows for a strong mechanical bond. Approximately ? inch of overall length of handle is removed during assembly.

ABOUT US

Council Tool Company is as much about people as it is about tools.
