The debut album from the ex-patriot American singer (she lives in England) harkens comparisons with the Ella Fitzgerald's impeccable style, but Kent is forging ground that she can call her own. Her delivery and attack of a note is spot on, her performances are exciting and vivacious. Stacey Kent has a very appealing voice, and her delivery is full of joy, enthusiasm and subtle creativity. Sticking mostly to veteran standards (only <i>Sleep Warm</i> was written after the 1950s), Kent sounds delightful while joined by a fine mainstream quintet. Jim Tomlinson contributes some tenor solos reminiscent in tone of Stan Getz, and pianist David Newton and guitarist Colin Oxley also get some solo space. When originally released in 1997, this CD garnered huge international acclaim, including appearances on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR's Morning Edition, BBC Radio and reviews in every major paper in the U.S. and the U.K.
