It is hard to imagine a more troublesome time in which to start a newspaper, particularly one that supported progressive politics as America succumbed to war hysteria. But in 1917, during World War I and despite heavy criticism by his political and personal friends, William T. Evjue and a group of other young men rolled the first edition of The Capital Times off a rickety press in a converted ice cream parlor in downtown Madison. Nearly a century later, the Cap Times, as it is affectionately known in Madison, is an online magazine with a weekly print edition still dedicated to progressive politics and in-depth reporting. It covers topics including politics, government, education, technology, business, health and more. Its website, captimes.com, is part of the community portal madison.com, which offers breaking news, local news, analysis and opinion. The Kindle Edition of The Capital Times contains articles found in the print edition, but will not include some images and tables. Also, some features such as comics, puzzles and advertising are not currently available.
