In 1847, Oliver R. Chase and his brother entered the world of confections with their newly patented lozenge cutter, a piece of technology that allowed for the production of candy wafers on a massive scale. The company that grew from these early endeavors would eventually come to be known as the New England Confectionary Company, or NECCO, but for the next thirty years, their focus would be on bringing the machinery of the candy industry into the industrial age. Canada Mints, one of the first truly industrially produced confections, were released in the 1880s and quickly became the archetypical sugar lozenge mint in North America.
